We spoke to Mo Seetubtim, Founder of The Happiness Planner, and asked her to share her 3 top tips that she follows to live more mindfully. This is what she had to say…

If there is one thing that I have learned over the years which has significantly changed the way I live my life – it is learning to be more mindful about my days. What does it mean to be more mindful? To me, it means being more intentional about how I want my day to be. It means paying attention to my thoughts, actions, and emotions. And it means taking control of my life by taking the lead on the direction that I want my life to go.

Sometimes we let ourselves do things on auto-pilot and go about our days repeating the same old patterns. Our old patterns give us comfort and feeling of familiarity. But one key thing I realised, that is crucial to making any lasting change, is that I need to make that new habit a part of my lifestyle. I need to make it my new pattern - one that is so strong that I no longer fall back into the old.

The book that inspired me to start and live my day more mindfully is “The Art of Living Consciously” by Nathaniel Branden. So here, I’d like to share with you how living mindfully has helped me to improve my life over the past year, so that you may be able to improve yours too.

1.Gaining clarity and being focused

One of the things that has helped me to achieve almost everything I set my mind to is visualization. Since I was little, I have always visualized myself achieving my goals. Feeling the feelings that I would feel, saying the things that I would say. I would do that over and over - usually in the shower. Crazy right! Little did I know that this practice has been so effective and instrumental in helping me plant the seeds in my subconscious mind.

Being mindful helps you to question your actions and whether how you spend your time is in alignment with
who you are, and where you want to be.

Have you been feeling a little lost lately? Have you been doubting yourself? Have you been feeling unsure about where you’re headed? Carve some time out one evening. Find a quiet space. Search for some deep hypnotic music and meditate for one good hour. Think about what you want to happen in 2019, how it would happen, who would be there, how you’d feel, and let that play in your mind over and over.

2. Trusting, restoring faith, time and being patient.

One thing that life teaches you as you get older is that timing is everything and that patience is a virtue. Our past experiences and past pains may have created scars on our heart. Sometimes it is hard to know where the line is between being patient and wasting time – but everything happens as it’s supposed to. Completely closing each chapter in life takes time, but it is something we must do before we can happily begin a new chapter and let it beautifully blossom.

One thing I’ve learned greatly in life is to be patient and trust in the timing of life. Although, when you’re in it, it’s so hard to not be crept up on by anxieties about the unknown. It is a skill we need to cultivate over and over. Yet, it is only those who have mastered it that truly have mastered life.

3. Finding beauty in everything

Living mindfully helps you see that life is beautiful. Even the hurtful and difficult moments help you the most - they help you to build character and strength and make you become beautiful. In Buddhism, they say that misery is the greatest teacher if we choose to learn from them. This is such profound advice in my opinion.

Our life and its quality are a by-product of our experiences. We are in charge of our experiences which include not only our actions, but also our perceptions, attitudes, and reactions. Learning to see beauty in things is a trait that we should all cultivate. Gratitude to our heart and soul is what water is to plant. When you see that life is beautiful and that even a difficult journey is there to guide you to the right path – you can stay calm amidst the storm and feel happy no matter what happens.

Happiness is a state of mind; it lies in the way you look at things and you can shape, change, and influence this. You can cultivate and practice positive thinking, gratitude, mindfulness, and personal development, so that you continue to grow and feel fulfilled. I hope that you have had a beautiful last couple of weeks with the people you love and that you are excited for what 2019 will bring. And finally, I hope that you’re ready to make it a kick-ass year.
