Cutting Down On Food Wastage

We are huge advocates of preventing food wastage, especially when according to research, the UK today throws away around 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes, and half of this could have been eaten!

We put this into practice by having almost 0% wastage with our delivery service and under 5% wastage in our delis. This is why each day we run out of our delicious salads; we aim to make the perfect amount for the day so that all our food is fresh and none goes to waste.

Here are our 5 tips on how to reduce leftovers and create delicious and nutritious meals or snacks: 

  1. Think before you shop:

Make a list of foods you need for your meals ahead. Without a plan in mind you’ll be wondering around the aisles grabbing whatever takes your fancy, not ingredients you need!

  1. Make the most of the ingredient

Too often we throw away parts of vegetables and cuts of meat we feel we can’t use. The stems of broccoli and cauliflower leaves are delicious roasted or cooked in stews and curries. Keep your left over veg for juices, soups and broths. Why not try our refreshing, light and highly nutritious Broccoli and Ginger Soup.

  1. Keep the skin on!

Vegetables with thick skin like butternut squash and sweet potato are just as delicious with their skin on. Butternut squash skin is packed full of vitamin A, potassium and fibre, excellent for your skin and digestive health. Rather than removing the skin, leave it on for added flavour and texture! Why not try keeping the skin on your butternut squash with this simple and seasonal Roasted Vegetables with Basil and Rocket salad.

  1. Check your cupboards before going to the shops

You don’t need to buy extra sauces or shop bought dressings to make your food taste delicious. Use spices and herbs to add vibrancy and flavour to your meals. We love our Mexican Chicken and Black Bean Stew, packed full of punchy spices and perfect for a satisfying evening meal.

  1. Keep your leftovers

Fresh salads are still just as tasty the next day as they are that evening. Refrigerate your leftovers for lunches the next day – not only are you not wasting delicious food, you’re saving money on lunch the next day!
