With summer winding down, comes the undeniable ‘back to it’ energy. This may inspire some, it may fill others with dread. It’s not about forcing a new routine or rigidly sticking to a plan; it’s more about embracing that natural rhythm that comes with the season. After all, September is the ultimate reset month – no resolutions, just a gentle nudge to bring a bit more balance into the mix.

The Anchor of a Routine 

As we ease back into this new season, there's a comfort in returning to some familiar routines. Whether it’s swapping out lazy mornings for earlier alarms or reclaiming time for those lunchtime walks, September seems to invite a little structure. And that’s no bad thing. 

It turns out that our bodies *love* a good routine. Research shows that having some semblance of routine can improve our mental clarity, reduce decision fatigue, and leave us feeling more in control. According to the American Psychological Association, routines reduce stress with the predictability it brings to our lives – and after the whirlwind of summer, a little predictability is welcomed. 

When your sleep, meals, and exercise occur at regular intervals, your internal systems sync up in beautiful harmony. Medical studies have proven that irregular sleep patterns can wreak havoc on our circadian rhythms, leading to weight gain, increased risk of chronic illness, and general feelings of bleh (the scientific term, obviously). A 2017 study published in *Chronobiology International* showed that people who maintain consistent wake-up and bedtimes are more likely to have healthier BMI scores and lower levels of stress and fatigue. 

Another key aspect of a successful routine is meal timing. The "what" you eat is important, but *when* you eat can be equally critical for metabolic health. A 2019 study in the *Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism* revealed that people who stick to consistent eating schedules have better insulin sensitivity and reduced levels of inflammation compared to those who eat sporadically throughout the day.

On top of returning to elements of your routine that work for you, we encourage you to bring something new to your routine. Adopting simple, mindful wellbeing rituals such as meal prepping lunches, chewing more, drinking celery juice first thing or practicing breath work in the evening. 

A tip to inspire you to find your flow this month is to refresh your space. Here are some simple things we do at the beginning of each season:

  • Move some furniture around for some new feng-shui
  • Bring in some fresh flowers, arrange them in a different vase
  • Refresh your diffuser with a new scent
  • Light a new candle
  • Change up your bedding

Little things like these are likely to boost those endorphins and have you feeling revitalised and motivated. 

But hold on – this doesn’t mean every minute of your day has to be scheduled down to the last protein shake. In fact, rigid routines can have the opposite effect, leaving us feeling trapped or stifled. The key, as with most things, is balance.

There’s a lot of power in a well-structured day. Regular sleep, mealtimes, and exercise all play into our body’s natural rhythms, helping to keep our energy levels steady and our mood in check. But here’s the twist: routines work best when they have a little room to breathe.
