Get Out There

Our Online Editor, Emily Bell, talks about exercise and how to ignore those class skipping gremlins now that it's Spring...

Fitness

With detoxes to your door or healthy meals from our deli in Harvey Nichols (soon to be another deli coming soon in Soho this April), we know about food so you don’t have to worry. We remove foods that make you feel tired and bloated and replace them with a healthy balanced diet rich in plant-based foods and lean protein. Voila. You will start to feel more energised, less stressed and lighter.

But you can do more.

Exercise.

Don’t be scared of that one little word. Exercise can change your life. And as Elle Woods from Legally Blonde said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t kill their husbands. They just don’t.”

So that’s good.

It’s all about taking the first step and getting started. Now that it’s spring, the days are shorter and the weather is better you have no excuse. But if you’re still having trouble getting out there, try a few of these tips –

* Kit Yourself Out

Buy yourself some new kit. This will make you feel good and once you’ve got your kit on, you’re more than half way there. There’s no turning back. Throw away that baggy t-shirt and leggings from university and invest in some slick clothing that will make you want to run to your workout. If you feel good you will find it easier to get out there.

* Buddy Up

Find yourself a buddy. Whether it’s a buddy to go to a class with or a group training session, this is proven to help. It’s a lot harder to drop out when someone is on your case. You can help motivate each other when you’re finding things tough.

* Book It In

Treat your workouts like meetings. I schedule my classes into my diary. This means it’s harder to ‘forget’ or claim ‘you’re too busy’. If it’s in your diary, it’s easier to stick to.

* Be Nice

Don’t set yourself unrealistic goals. I know I don’t like training in the morning and I am more of an evening exerciser so I limit the amount of workouts I schedule for the morning because I know it will be less likely to happen.

Once you’ve got your kit, the class booked and your buddy to make you go, you will be out there in no time. And once you start sleeping better, looking better and feeling energised and healthy, you will find it harder and harder to skip. The days are longer, the mornings/ evenings are brighter so get out there.
