How Tidying Up Can Change Your Life

We learn that taking part in the ultimate spring clean of your home can lead to so much more than you might think...

Lifestyle

Our Communications Consultant, Kiran, has read Mary Kondo's 'The Life-changing Magic Of Tidying' and here she explain how it has changed her life...

Like many of you, I grew up surrounded by friends and family from whom I learnt the basics of being a self sufficient adult. But the lesson about the importance of keeping order in the household escaped me completely. Before I had picked up Marie Kondo’s, ‘The Life-changing Magic Of Tidying’, behind my home's facade of beautifully potted cacti and soft furnishings, I lived in a constant state of organised chaos. My mail existed in three different drawers (one of which was at my childhood home in the Midlands), unopened boxes from a house move years ago held unknown contents which were completely lost on me, and phone chargers vanished within a black hole that circulated my home.

Now those days are (hopefully) behind me, it is with a clear mind and even clearer home that I share with you my top tips for applying the 'KonMari' method to tidying your home:

It’s so much more than cleaning!
A de-cluttered environment leads to a clear mind which presents the opportunity for you to be the best version of yourself. Quality of work, relationships and ability to relax really are all impacted by the space in which you live in. Shift your mindset from thinking of tidying up in a silo. As soon as I gave it more weight I was more determined to maintain clarity in the home.

Settle for nothing less than love.
Something I have always lived my life by, but never applied to my belongings, was the concept of getting rid of absolutely everything that didn’t ultimately give you joy. It was through this simple method that I was able to shed baggage- literally and emotionally! Oh so satisfying.

There’s no place to hide.
You can have all of the storage in the world, but they hoard clutter. In the wise words of Marie Kondo, ‘...Storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away, not the effort needed to get them out.”
