3 days on the Protein Package, a Review

Working at Detox Kitchen I am lucky enough to eat a lot of delicious, healthy food. And I try to cook from scratch as much as possible for my meals at home. But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy a sourdough pizza and an Aperol spritz. So detoxing is not something that necessarily comes naturally to me. This is why I wanted to document my experience on one of our detoxes to show that anybody and everybody can benefit from one.

This is why I wanted
to document my experience on one of our detoxes to show that anybody and everybody can benefit from one. Here goes.

Day 1:
Having worked at Detox Kitchen for over a year and a half, it is still exciting to wake up to that beautiful polka dot box on my doorstep. Everybody loves receiving post, and especially post that includes food in it.

Breakfast is a pot of pecan granola with soy yogurt and fresh berries. Delicious, fresh and paired with the green juice I’m set until lunch.

It’s 11am, I’m not going to lie, I can’t stop thinking about coffee and how much I miss my morning fix.

Lunchtime. A vibrant dish of Mexican bean and mixed pepper salad. Delicious and definitely filling. So far I don’t feel like I’m on a detox, bar the lack of caffeine which my cravings for have now subsided.

It’s 4pm, the sugar cravings are kicking in. It’s around now that I will get a beetroot brownie or ginger cake from the deli. Instead I tuck in to my edamame and avocado salad snack pot. While very different to my usual sweet treat, it hits the spot.Dinner is a salmon fishcake with turmeric cauliflower couscous. To look at I didn’t think it would be enough, but after heating the fishcake up the whole meal was transformed and was totally delicious. I almost forgot about my pistachio truffle for pudding!

Day 2:
I practically leapt out of bed. Whereas normally I’ll feel tired no matter how much sleep I get, I can’t quite believe how well I slept.Breakfast is a zesty lime chia pot, and lunch is an old favourite of mine from the delis, a butternut squash and brown rice salad with rosemary dressing.

2pm, I’m starting to feel tired and feeling a bit headachy.

Dinner is a Thai green curry couldn’t have come fast enough, and I’m not going to lie, I ate my berry crumble dessert at 5pm.

Today was hard. I felt headachy and drained. I’m taking comfort in the fact that I was expecting this, and this is normal of a detox. It’s literally my body recovering from the addiction to caffeine and sugar, and pain is weakness leaving the body right?

Day 3:
Again, a wonderfully sound sleep.

Another day of tasty food, including coconut muesli, quinoa tabbouleh and the highlight, turkey meatballs with caponata for dinner.

I am also very pleased to report that I haven’t craved caffeine once the entire day and my energy is back with a bang.

Summary:
The two things that surprised me most by doing this detox was firstly how well I slept for the entirety of the detox, and second just how addicted I am/have been to caffeine (can you tell?). I didn’t consider myself as much of a coffee drinker, but the physical shock to my system by not having it daily was striking. While I don’t think I will be giving up my morning coffee for good, I am definitely going to try and cut down on it, and also try to go consecutive days without it. I’ve also enjoyed my daily cup of peppermint tea which is something I will definitely be incorporating into my daily routine for good!

A bonus, my stomach is noticeably flatter, and I haven’t experienced any of the usual bloating after meals. And is it just me or has my skin cleared up too?
